Situated in the high-altitude climate of Queensland’s Granite Belt, New Tricks is a winery driven by a beautifully simple philosophy: Family, Genuine, and Fun. For this family-started, owned, and operated business, the primary goal has always been to bring people together in lovely spaces, sharing lovely food and wine to create lasting memories.
Behind the welcoming atmosphere of New Tricks lies a profound story of environmental restoration. Before the family established the vineyard, the property operated as a commercial tomato farm that relied on large amounts of infrastructure and chemical inputs. Transforming this heavily commercialised land into a thriving, sustainable vineyard was no small feat. Over many years, the team painstakingly nursed the soils back to health before planting a single vine.
Today, that dedication to the land is matched by a commitment to clean energy, with the winery proudly operating fully on solar power.
Family, Genuine, & Fun
While the restored soils produce excellent fruit, a massive part of the “lovely food and wine” equation at New Tricks comes down to a brilliant stroke of serendipity.
The family’s hidden story centres on their chef, Alae. Alae originally came to New Tricks as a backpacker picking grapes in the vines. It was only after getting to know him that the team discovered he was actually a highly trained Moroccan and French chef. Recognising his immense talent, they quickly moved him from the vineyard into the kitchen. Today, Alae runs the winery’s culinary offerings and is rapidly building a reputation for himself—and for New Tricks—as one of the absolute best places to eat in the area.
For wine lovers exploring the Granite Belt Regional Tasting Trail, New Tricks offers an intimate, highly genuine visitor experience. The estate features a physical cellar door open to the public, with by-appointment tastings available throughout the week. When you book a weekday visit, there is a very good chance your tasting will be hosted directly by the winemaker, offering a personal connection to the wines in your glass
