In the heart of South Australia’s Barossa region, Langmeil Winery operates under three guiding principles: heritage, community, and family. For this historic estate, sustainability isn’t a single project, but a practical way of thinking designed to ensure the land, people, and wines thrive for years to come.
Life at Langmeil starts from the ground up. The vineyard floors are blanketed in permanent swards—or cover crops—that protect the soil from erosion, suppress weeds without leaving bare ground, and create crucial habitats for beneficial pest predators.
Just beyond the vines lies the estate’s local gem: the North Para River. Langmeil is actively restoring native vegetation and wildlife corridors along the river’s banks, an effort that improves water quality, stabilises the landscape, and supports healthier land and aquatic ecosystems. This revegetation has also made native birdlife a regular and welcome part of the property, providing a natural haven for insect-eating birds that contribute to a healthier vineyard.
Heritage, Community & Family
While a pristine vineyard is highly visible, much of Langmeil’s most impactful environmental work happens behind the scenes after the harvest is complete. The winery has adopted a highly innovative approach to resource management, ensuring that valuable materials are kept in use rather than becoming waste:
-
Grape marc is distilled for ethanol, seeds are utilised for grapeseed-oil products, stalks are composted, and any remaining material is converted into garden mulch.
-
A 99.12 kW solar system is estimated to reduce Langmeil’s total grid-power consumption by a massive 62.2%. Additionally, upgrading traditional lighting to LEDs saves an estimated 14,814 kWh of energy and 17,777 kg of carbon emissions each year.
-
The estate stores up to 900,000 litres of rainwater and actively recycles and treats winery wastewater for vineyard irrigation.
-
Transitioning to a lighter Barossa bottle removes 2.04 kg of glass from the supply chain per dozen, saving an estimated 100 g of CO2 emissions per bottle through production and transport.

Langmeil understands that a sustainable region cannot be built alone. The winery is supplied by dedicated family-owned growers, including Environmental Champions of Barossa, and twelve of their growers are Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certified. Together, they are building a more resilient region that protects the unique character of the Barossa.
